The way I began seeing the good things already in my life was to write down the things I was grateful for right now. These are the things you would miss if they went away, the people you love or care about, the freedoms that you have, the way your life is better now than it was when you were a child.

It can be as simple as being grateful you have clothes, or a roof over your head. Even if tomorrow is uncertain, you have these things today, so write them down.

Keep writing until you can’t think of anything else to write. Look around your room. Look around your neighborhood. Think of what you have that others don’t. See how many you can list.

It’s not a race, or a competition. No one has to see the list. No one will judge you if you don’t have as many as someone else, or if you have more than someone else. Do not let your littles be shamed by the others for being grateful for simple things.

Protect your gratitude, because that is the road towards a better life.
